Experience the calving glacier that every day throws many tons of ice in the fjord at Eqi, 80 km north of Ilulissat. Millions of tiny air bubbles with compressed air are cracking in huge explosions – forced in the fiord  by the ever floating ice stream. Eqi is one of the few places where it is possible to experience a calving glacier at close range, as conditions allow to get close to the glacier. Of course, at a safe distance where you can both see and hear the spectacular scenario.

The trip goes north from Ilulissat, and up through the beautiful Ataa fiord surrounded by high mountains. When you round the last headland and the Eqi glacier appears - a new world opens up. It is difficult to understand that the glacier front is 4 km wide. But the closer we get to the glacier, the more you will se how big the Greenlandic nature is.

Many say that this trip to the Eqi glacier is one of their highlights from the trip to Greenland.

Start from Ilulissat Harbour. Either as a morning or evening tour.

Sailing along the coast up to Eqi, the calving glacier

This is one of the fastest moving glaciers on the northern hemisphere.

On the way it will be possible to witness humpback whales and beautiful icebergs.

Enjoy leisure time in front of the glacier - see it melt. We stay there appx 1 hours depending on the ice situation.

after leisure time we start sailing back.

Sailing back to Ilulissat

Sailing speed will be appx 26 knots, and the time to get there and back is around 2 hours each way

Many say that this trip to the Eqi glacier is one of their highlights from the trip to Greenland.

The humpback whale is one of the animals in the world that moves furthest. They come to the Disko Bay in the summer to eat large amounts of krill and small fish. The whale typically comes from Haiti and Puerto Rico, where they breed in winter. Humpback whales can grow up to 15 meters long and can weigh up to 30 tons.

The humpback whale is the whale we usually see in the Disco Bay, and it is easily recognizable on the beautiful tail. To experience these giants of the sea at close range is almost a spiritual experience that overwhelms many.

We start from the tourist ponton located on the northern part of the harbour. Look for the yellow boat.

We start with a safety briefing, before we start the engine and set out. The boat ca accomodate 6 persons in a heated cabin.

We sail out and start looking for the Whales. They can be anywhere - every day is different.

When we find the whales, you decide how long time we will stay at every individual.

When the time is up we will start heading back towards town.

When you are going out on an adventure, it is highly recommended to bring both camera and binoculars. It is also advisable to bring warm clothes. On this boat there is heated cabin, but prepare and bring clothes that keep you warm, when you want to sit outside on the front deck. A neck warmer and glowes is always good.

Catch your own dinner in the pure arctic cold water. Fishing has always been - and still is - important for the Greenlandic people. And therefore a fishing trip is one of the most authentic things you can experience.

The kind of fish we go for will vari with the season. In June, it is possible to catch “ammassatter” (small salmon fish that can be shovelled in the boat), later in the summer, there are good opportunities for cod and trout.

There are simple fishing gear on the boat, but it is also possible to bring your own fishing rod. Fishing licenses can be redeemed here – print this and go to the post office in Ilulissat, and they can help you.

We sail out of the harbour, and look for some different fishing spots, depending on weather and other things.
